The first stage of a piece is design. During this phase multiple thumbnails are developed into detailed drawings which in turn are developed into prototypes. Once the final form is loosely determined fabrication begins. Kevin works mostly by commission, but sometimes offers up experimental projects for sale. Fabrication is the next phase in the construction of a piece. This stage consists of cutting raw material into the correct sizes and shapes, then shaping and forming them into the functional units that will become the finished work. These pieces are then joined together and the final form of the piece is realized. This stage can involve many different processes and media types.
The last stage of creation is finishing. This consists of all the detailed fine tuning of a project to make a finished piece. Welds are ground and finished, surfaces are prepped and patinas/paint are applied. This is often the most time consuming step in the whole process, but is also the most rewarding.
